While The Lost Symbol does make some references to the other two novels, you don’t need to have read them to understand the story. The only thing I’d say was important to know from the previous books is Robert Langdons fear of enclosed spaces, as that comes into play.

In general, The Lost Symbol fills the reader in on anything from the previous tales that they’d need to know to understand this one.

Probably not. I haven’t read it yet myself, but Dan Brown’s books usually have completely separate story lines even if the character is the same. There might be a couple of references to things that happened in the other books, but it won’t have anything to do with the main plot.

^^^agreed, brainamp. the davinci code was the sequel to angels and demons and i think there were a total of 5 lines of dialouge that related to the previous book, none of which were important. he’ll probably do the same thing in the lost symbol.

not exactly,. but it helps. you can still enjoy the book without reading the da vinci code or angels and demons.
