I haven't read it yet myself, but Dan Brown's books usually have completely separate story lines even if the character is the same. The only thing I'd say was important to know from the previous books is Robert Langdons fear of enclosed spaces, as that comes into play. In general, The Lost Symbol fills the reader in on anything from the previous tales that they'd need to know to understand this one.
