The Lost Symbol doesn’t particularly describe Masonic initiation rituals in detail. In fact, the ritual in the book is from the late 19th/early 20th century. If you want to know more about Masonic ritual, you can look it up in the Library of Congress, all the ritual is in there.
Mormonism and Freemasonry aren’t that closely related.
The mormon religion is based on pagan beliefs that’s why and Masonicism is Pagan. Have a look into different dates on the christian calendar too. 25th of december is the birthday of the sun god Rah an egyptian pagan god. Bible scholars believe jesus true birthday would be sometime in september because of the weather described in that period of time.
Lots of fraternities and clubs copied the pattern of how Masonic rituals operate – if you can copy a good pattern it’s easier than creating one by yourself.
Other than superficial likenesses these are all very different- it’s like saying that a Kindergarten and a College class are the same thing because the teacher sits up front.
As others have said, "The Lost Symbol" is based on fiction. The rituals noted therein are part true, part hogwash. For example: I’m a Master Mason, a Knight Templar in the York Rite and 32nd Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite…no, we don’t drink wine or blood from a human skull. Some of the Masonic rituals resemble Mormon rituals because the founder of the Mormon Church was a Freemason, if only for a short time. Many fraternities mirror the rituals, beliefs, and morality of Freemasonry as it has influenced many men over the centuries. The Knights of Pythias is one such organization, as is the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.
Please remember that Dan Brown is not a Freemason and everything he knows is from reading other books. His work is fiction and not meant to be taken as anything but entertainment.

The book is FICTION. When will people understand that it’s FICTION!! You know NOT FACT BASED!!!!.
It’s a story of intrigue. The rituals are not entirely correct, as some information was omitted.
The initiations are similar because John Smith was a freemason for a while.

Because John Smith was a Freemason for a while. It also could be that the Mormons were persecuted just like the Freemasons were.
